Wal-Mart looks to add new Charleston area store, remodel two others

Wal-Mart will open two new stores in South Carolina this year and could add four others, including a new Neighborhood Market in the Charleston region. Wal-Mart is in the pre-planning phase for a new Neighborhood Market store in the region by January 2018.

The exact location of the proposed Charleston-area store was not disclosed since it’s in the initial stages of development, but it will be in the Summerville area, Keene said. The two supercenters set to be remodeled include those in Centre Pointe near Tanger Outlet Center and on Rivers Avenue near Ashley Phosphate Road.

Wal-Mart hopes to open five other new stores across South Carolina this year.

Two of those have been confirmed, including a Neighborhood Market store in Myrtle Beach and a supercenter in Beaufort, according to Keene. They will create about 350 jobs by Jan. 31, the end of the company’s fiscal year.
